Background Information:

Richard Baxter was a fairly average human being, a fairly unremarkable person if not for one thing. He was addicted to having sex. Sex is what Richard craves and he craves a lot of it. Having died in a car crash, Richard's soul was judged as pure enough to become an angel. However, his soul was deemed not pure enough to become any type of angel. He was too tainted to be a Cherub. His convictions were two weak to be a Seraphim. His patience was too thin to become a Throne.

When the Archangel Azrael died, however, none of the angels were deemed right for the position. Richard was seen as the best fit for the positon as Azrael so he skipped a stage in the evolution of an angel by not being an angel before he became an Archangel. And just as he becomes an Archangel, the apocalypse just happens to start, something that he isn't ready for, especially seeing as he still hasn't really come to terms with being dead, let along being reborn as an angel.
